Here’s a simple guide on how to wash and clean a paintbrush properly, depending on the type of paint you used:
For Water-Based Paints (like acrylic or latex):
Remove Excess Paint
Wipe off as much paint as possible on the edge of the paint can or on newspaper.
Rinse in Warm Water
Rinse the brush under warm running water. Use your fingers or a brush comb to loosen paint from the bristles.
Use Soap
Apply a mild dish soap or brush cleaner to the bristles. Work it through with your fingers to break down the paint.
Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse again in warm water until the water runs clear and no paint remains.
Shake and Dry
Shake out excess water and reshape the brush bristles. Lay it flat or hang it to dry with the bristles pointing down or sideways to avoid deforming.
For Oil-Based Paints:
Remove Excess Paint
Wipe off as much paint as possible.
Use Solvent
Pour some paint thinner, mineral spirits, or brush cleaner into a container. Dip and swirl the brush in the solvent until the paint dissolves.
Repeat if Needed
You may need to repeat with fresh solvent until the brush is clean.
Wash with Soap and Water
After solvent cleaning, wash the brush with warm soapy water to remove solvent residue.
Rinse and Dry
Rinse thoroughly, shake out excess water, reshape the bristles, and dry flat or hang.
Extra Tips:
Never soak brushes for a long time; it can damage the bristles.
Use a brush comb or an old fork to gently remove paint trapped near the ferrule (the metal part).
Store brushes properly to maintain their shape.
